International Nurses Day Staff Spotlight

2 minute read

This International Nurses Day, we’re celebrating the nurses who bring skill, heart, and humanity to every shift. Today, we’re proud to feature Mel, our HDU and CIU Team Leader at Allevia Hospital Ascot.

Mel’s path into nursing began in Korea, where she trained and worked across busy wards & HDU and recovery units while studying English at night to prepare for a move overseas. “Here, nurses provide comprehensive care from head to toe, and you have more time with each patient, and I really value that.”

She moved to New Zealand in 2011 and joined Allevia Hospitals in 2019 after several years in the public sector. “When I interviewed, I loved the environment. Christmas off, weekends with family — it was the perfect fit.”

Mel quickly became a valued member of the HDU team and was encouraged to step into leadership. She also joined PACU as a casual to keep developing her skills. “That’s what I love about Allevia Hospitals — they encourage you to grow and learn new things.”

Last year, HDU took over the Cardiac Investigation Unit (CIU), and Mel now leads both teams. “It was a big change, but everyone stepped up. I’m incredibly proud of my team.”

What she values most is the trust and autonomy built into the HDU environment. “We work closely with senior consultants and use our critical thinking. It’s a very supportive and trusting environment.”

And at the heart of it all is her love for nursing. “When people come into hospital, it can be one of the hardest moments of their lives. With my two hands, I can do something helpful for someone else. That’s why I love my job.”

Mel, thank you for your leadership, compassion, and dedication.

Happy International Nurses to all our incredible nurses across Allevia Hospitals.
