Caleb Stannett, RN

International Nurses Day Staff Spotlight

2 minute read

This International Nurses Day, we’re celebrating the nurses who bring skill, heart, and personality to Allevia. And if you’ve met Caleb, you’ll know he brings all three — plus a good dose of humour — to every shift.

Caleb didn’t take the traditional path into nursing. “I originally had a job that had absolutely nothing to do with healthcare,” he says. “Then I started working as a Healthcare Assistant at Waikato Hospital — and I loved it. Working with people, caring for them, helping them when they come out of theatre… I had this feeling of, oh, this is actually the right job for me.”

After training as a nurse and moving to Auckland, he joined Allevia Hospitals almost two years ago, working across St Cecilia and McAuley wards at Allevia Hospital Epsom. What he enjoys most about nursing is simple: “You get to help people when they’re not feeling their best. You can make a real difference — make things a little easier. It’s a good feeling.”

Caleb has embraced development opportunities at Allevia Hospitals, including becoming a Hand Hygiene Ambassador. “Yes, that’s right,” he grins. “I get to remind surgeons about the five golden rules of hand washing. It’s a power trip.”

He’s also completed preceptor training, something he genuinely enjoys. “I often get assigned to onboard new or younger team members. It’s nice helping people settle in.”

When asked what he enjoys most about working for Allevia, he doesn’t hesitate: “Two weeks off at Christmas. That’s a huge selling point. I get to see family over the holidays — major bonus.”

But it’s the clinical environment that keeps him engaged. “In public, you mostly deal with junior doctors. Here, you talk directly with specialists. You’re more involved, and you take on responsibilities you wouldn’t get in public — like preparing discharge papers. It’s great experience.”

Caleb sums it up: “I didn’t plan on becoming a nurse, but I’m glad I did. It’s meaningful work, and Allevia Hospitals has been a great place to grow — and to have a laugh along the way.”

Happy International Nurses Day to Caleb and to all our incredible nurses across Allevia Hospitals. Thank you for everything you do.
