Blue September: A time to start the conversation about prostate health

September is Blue September, New Zealand’s annual prostate cancer awareness and fundraising campaign. It is an opportunity to raise awareness of prostate cancer, support those affected by the disease, and encourage informed conversations about prostate health.

2 mins minute read

Prostate cancer isthe most commonly diagnosed cancer in people with a prostate in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Blue September campaign notes that 1 in 8 men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime, highlighting the importance of awareness, education and early engagement with healthcare professionals.

Understanding the symptoms

One of the challenges with prostate cancer is that it may not cause symptoms, particularly in its early stages. However, symptoms can include:

  • Changes in urinary flow or frequency
  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • A need to urinate more often, especially at night
  • Pain or discomfort when urinating
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Lower back or pelvic pain
  • Unexplained weight loss

These symptoms can be caused by conditions other than cancer, but they should always be discussed with a healthcare provider.

If you have symptoms, concerns, or a family history of prostate cancer, talk with your GP or healthcare provider. Decisions about prostate checks and PSA testing should be informed and individual, taking into account your personal circumstances and medical history.

Why awareness matters

Blue September is about more than fundraising. It aims to support people affected by prostate cancer and their whānau, raise awareness of prostate health, and encourage people to seek trusted information and medical advice when needed. Funds raised through the campaign help support advocacy, research, education and support services for those living with prostate cancer.

Supporting Blue September

Throughout the month, individuals, workplaces and communities across New Zealand take part in fundraising and awareness activities. Whether it is hosting an event, taking on a personal challenge, or simply starting a conversation about prostate health, every action helps raise awareness and support those affected by prostate cancer.

At Allevia Hospitals, we are proud to support initiatives that promote health awareness, encourage informed healthcare decisions, and help improve outcomes for patients and communities across Aotearoa. Our teams are also getting behind Blue September through fundraising and awareness activities to support the important work of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.
